Who will be teaching the workshops?
That would be me, Abigail, the sole person behind Curiously Contrary!
I am a qualified teacher and fully certified Powertex Tutor.
I have been teaching for over 10 years and have been running creative workshops since 2016.
I am a self taught artist and sell my work at festivals, events and through retail spaces in the North East of England.
I am also a member of the Powertex UK Design Team, writing monthly blogs including step-by-step tutorials for original projects.
Will I complete my project in the workshop?
I have designed all of my workshops so that you will be able to complete the project within the timescale of the workshop.
Your creation will also be dry by the end of the workshop, however, it is likely that it may still be slightly soft due to the time Powertex takes to dry. Therefore please handle and transport your creation with care - it will harden up over the next day or two.
If your creation is destined for outdoors, please make sure you keep it indoors for approximately 3 weeks to ensure it has fully cured and is able to withstand the unpredictability of the British weather.
Do I need to bring anything with me to the workshop?
The short answer is 'no'.
I believe that creative workshops should be fun, worry free spaces where you can totally absorb yourself in the creative process. Therefore I make sure that everything needed to create your project is provided for you. This includes aprons, gloves, a vast array of fabrics and embellishments appropriate to the project being undertaken.
However, if you would like to bring something with you to include in your project to make it more special/unique to you, then please do.
If you are attending a full day workshop, then you may like to bring a packed lunch. You will receive further details about your specific workshop a few days before which will include information about lunch arrangements/nearby places to purchase lunch.
Do you run workshops for private groups?
Yes, I can run my workshops almost anywhere, so if you can provide a venue and a group of people, then I can run you a workshop.
These could be for an established group that meets regularly at a venue (e.g. craft group, WI, ) or for a private party in your home (e.g. birthday party, hen/stag party, baby shower, etc). A quote will be provided based on the number of people participating and project you would like to complete.
I also provide sessions for children, suitable for primary school age upwards. These have been run in schools but would also be suitable for home-schooled children and other children's groups.
I can also run workshops for businesses or other corporate organisations, as team building sessions or as a method to promote wellbeing in the workplace.
If you are interested in me running a workshop for you, please get in contact with what you have in mind and I will be able to provide a quote.
Do you provide 1:1 tuition?
Yes, I can provide tuition on a 1:1 or small group basis. This is perfect if you would prefer to have a session which is tailored to your needs/experience level or if there are particular techniques you would like to learn or particular projects you would like to complete.
Please contact me to discuss your requirements in more detail.
What is Powertex?
When I talk about Powertex, I am referring to the product called Powertex Universal Medium, although Powertex also produces a wide range of other products.
Powertex Universal Medium is a liquid medium which is water based and non toxic. It was originally produced as a fabric hardener but also readily acts as a paint and glue. It can be used with any natural fibre fabrics and any natural or porous surfaces. It comes in ten different base colours and also transparent. Except for the transparent version, all of the other coloured mediums are water and weather resistant once they have fully cured (approx 3 weeks).
Powertex Universal Medium can also be mixed with other products and substrates to create texture pastes, clays, paints, rust, stone effects, etc.
Where can I buy Powertex products from?
As a Powertex Tutor and Team Leader, I hold a small stock of the majority of Powertex products, which can be made available to you.
So, if you are in the County Durham or wider North East area and need some products quickly, I can normally help. Please contact me to check if I have what you are after and to arrange collection.
My Powertex Starter Kits are available to buy through this website and also through my Etsy shop. These contain the basics for you to get started on your first project and come with instructions.
Otherwise, the easiest way to obtain Powertex products is directly through the Powertex UK website. They have a fantastic team who are very efficient at turning around your orders.
Is it suitable for children?
Powertex products are non-toxic and are perfectly safe to use with children.
In fact children love them.
I run a range of specifically designed children's workshops which involve simpler, quicker projects that are more appealing to younger minds. I normally place a lower age limit of 7 years on these workshops, however I have worked with younger children also - please get in contact to check suitability for younger ages.
Children must be accompanied by an adult during all workshops. It is a lovely experience for parents and children to craft together, however the accompanying adult does not need to participate.
Most of my other workshops are suitable for older children aged 12 and above. Younger children may also be able participate - again, please get in contact to check.
How long does Powertex Universal Medium keep for?
Powertex should be stored in an airtight container, above 5˚C. If stored in this way it should last indefinitely. The different components within Powertex can separate when it stands, so always ensure that you give the bottle a good shake before use.
Never pour unused Powertex back into the original container as this can shorten its lifespan.
I have used Powertex that has been over two years old with no problems.
